Bureaucrat-turned politician who was prime minister between Dec. 7, 1978 and June 12, 1980. Born on March 12, 1910 in Kagawa Prefecture, Ohira joined the Finance Ministry in 1936. He was elected to the House of Representative in 1952. As foreign minister, Ohira was instrumental in normalizing diplomatic relations between Japan and China in 1972.
